There are plenty of USA retailers you have heard of – ones that dominate ad space on television and have big, expansive storefronts. But there are also plenty of USA retailers who employ tons of workers and have high values, but go unheard of by the average individual.

Most of these retailers go unknown due to location, causing shoppers to only know of them if they happen to live in the same region where the retailers operate. For this reason, it can be easy to fail to realize just how big these retailers are.

1. TJX – Founded in 1956, TJX is located in Framingham, MA and employs 154,000 people. The company is valued at $20 billion. TJX retail stores performed well during the last recession, which includes outlets like A.J. Wright, HomeGoods, and T.J. Maxx. In total, TJX maintains over 2,175 stores in the United States, and even more throughout Europe and Canada.

2. Menards – A home improvement chain with branches in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, Menards is based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The company earns about $7.5 billion annually and also generates income from selling and leasing real estate.

3. Giant Eagle – With supermarkets in Maryland, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, Giant Eagle's income is more than $9 billion a year. Founded in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1918, the company has 417 stores. It also operates 168 GetGo fuel station and convenience stores.

4. Meijer – A general food and merchandise chain with 200 stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, Meijer pioneered the superstore concept in 1962. Today, they take in over $14 billion a year.

5. H.E.B. – Here Everything’s Better, or H.E.B., is a company that provides photo processing, pharmacy, and grocery services in 300 locations throughout Texas (and Mexico). Their annual sales exceed $15 billion.

6. Pilot Travel Centers – This company, founded in 1958, operates out of its headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee and rakes in about $16.5 billion in sales a year. Pilot Travel Centers is actually North America’s largest travel plaza and travel centers operator, selling gas, diesel, and food. In fact, Pilot is the largest franchiser of Subway, with 120 locations.

7. Delhaize America – This Salisbury, North Carolina company is a subsidiary of the Belgian company Delhaize Group. Delhaize America operates a number of large supermarket chains including Bottom Dollar Food, Hannaford, and Food Lion. They have annual sales in excess of $19 billion.
